Diary of a Teenage Girl: An Account in Words and Pictures by Phoebe Gloeckner
Diary of a Teenage Girl: An Account in Words and Pictures

HillaryS, August 6, 2012

This is one of those books you'll either get or you'll want to forget. Phoebe is one of my favorite authors ever because she's so totally honest.I read this book when I was searching for something different & something real. This story is so real, almost too real, and If you're brave enough to ingest Phoebe's story, you won't be able to put it down. She's also an amazing renderer, so if you like this, just buy all her books & then wait impatiently for what she's doing next, like me.

The Descent of Alette by Alice Notley
The Descent of Alette

HillaryS, August 6, 2012

Caution: you must read the author's note about the text, or you will become intimidated and/or distracted. That being said, once you accept what Notely is doing with form, this poem becomes ridonklous! It's like The Odyssey & Dante's Inferno rode the 7 into a feminist manifesto. But it's not overtly feminist, if that's not your thing. Notley's imagery will stay with you for a while (trust me), & if you choose to delve further, you'll notice Notley's an amazing poet.

The Shadow of Sirius by W. S. Merwin
The Shadow of Sirius

HillaryS, August 6, 2012

Merwin is the kind of poet non poetry reading people want to read. He's topically accessible, but then also a genius in layering symbolism & imagery. I had to read this book for a class, but I'm so glad I was introduced to his writing, and I will be exploring more.
