One-Man Boat: The George Hitchcock Reader by George Hitchcock
One-Man Boat: The George Hitchcock Reader

Hitchcock fan, October 6, 2010

Hitchcock is best known as the editor of kayak magazine, an outrageously brilliant literary magazine that thrived for 20 years, from 1964 to 1984. It is in that magazine where I discovered scores of poets--McGrath, Levine, Lipsitz, Simic, Atwood, Merwin, Starck, bizzare found poems, &tc... And most of these people were not "names" at the time. But the biggest discovery was Hitchcock himself, whose editorial savvy and surreal flair made every issue hum and zing. It is no surprise to discover that Hitchcock was also a fine writer himself--of poems, plays, and short stories. One-Man Boat is a rich smorgasbord--from Hitchcock's cocky and hilarious HUAC testimony from the Congressional Record to his blisteringly apropos rejection slips from kayak. I've read this book cover-to-cover three times and given away several copies. For those friends who say "Hey, that was a great book," I have a special place in my heart. If you have any interest in 20th century American literature, please read this book.
