Wrestling with Starbucks: Conscience, Capital, Cappuccino by Kim Fellner
Wrestling with Starbucks: Conscience, Capital, Cappuccino

Howell, September 28, 2008

Kim Fellner has been a friend and colleague of mine for years. Her first book has the engaging and thoughtful style she exhibits in her writing and organizing work. It's great to get an inside look at Starbucks through the eyes of an activist trying to sort out the contradictions- is Starbucks a good employer, a meglomanical global corporation, a contributor to fair trade practices, a anti-labor management team - or some mix of them all? Kim seeks to look at all the dimensions of the Starbucks phenomena and creates a compelling and extremely readable book. I particularly enjoyed the chapters examining the impacts - good and bad - on coffee farmers and cooperatives in Central America. Anyone trying to figure out what kind of corporate policies we should hope and work for should read this book.
