We are devoted omnivores around here, but this book's greatest gift is that you don't feel something's missing when you enjoy these meat-free meals. I made the Shepherd's Pie as the "ta-da" dish for a vegetarian friend at my huge Thanksgiving bash. Everyone wanted more. Everyone. Tonight we're making her falafel with nary a whine from the carnivore husband.

Mas writes eloquently of life lessons learned on the farm, learned from his father, and learned watching the relationship of his parents in their prime as well as after his father's stroke. There is such grace and wisdom in his storytelling. This book is for anyone who's ever worked hard, loved someone through illness or lean times, or ached when a loved one is hurt. It's also a book for students of the new agricultural revolution, or the evolution really, that has us counting on the wisdom of farmers and recoiling from the horrors of "modern advances". This should be required reading for anyone contemplating farming as a vocation. His stories teach us a lot, sure. They're also just beautiful vignettes that stay with you. On a recent peach picking afternoon, I found myself hearing his words in my head and remembering the eloquence of a farmer who could be considered a national treasure.
