Kafka Was the Rage: A Greenwich Village Memoir by Anatole Broyard
Kafka Was the Rage: A Greenwich Village Memoir

James K-M, August 4, 2012

Broyard is an insightful yet pragmatic writer. The book is an interesting read and full of anecdotes and a bit of gossip about coming of age in Greenwich Village in the '40's.

The Pale King by David Foster Wallace
The Pale King

James K-M, January 1, 2012

This is an important book, warts and all. It has a subtle and profound intelligence and requires an attention and patience from the reader that I've not experienced since reading James Joyce's Ulysses. The Pale King may be a Ulysses for our moment in time.

Mistress of Modernism Mistress of Modernism: The Life of Peggy Guggenheim the Life of Peggy Guggenheim by Mary V Dearborn
Mistress of Modernism Mistress of Modernism: The Life of Peggy Guggenheim the Life of Peggy Guggenheim

James K-M, January 1, 2011

This is my favourite book of 2010. It is well written and well researched and tells the story of the sometimes dysfunctional but always dynamic and well-intentioned Peggy Guggenheim. The book makes me miss her as if I'd actually known her.
