The Hangman's Daughter by Oliver Potzsch

This was my favorite book of 2012. It is a wonderful combination of mystery, suspense, historical fiction, and a touch of romance. The characters were well written and the story was one that was hard to put down. I liked the author's postscript about his family's history as hangmen for many generations centuries ago and the records that his relatives kept. So the story had some factual aspects in addition to the fictitious mystery. I highly recommend it.

The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest University by Kevin Roose

I really enjoyed this book. I felt like I was checking in with a friend as I read a few pages every day. Kevin Roose provided a good deal of insight on the students attending an ultra conservative college from the viewpoint of a liberal outsider. I appreciated that he came to realize we all are not that different, liberal or conservative, and there should be plenty of room for us all to find common ground. I highly recommend this book.

Blowing My Cover: My Life as a CIA Spy by Lindsay Moran

It was fascinating to read of the author's experiences while training to become a CIA agent. The narrative is fast-paced and a quick read. It was also very interesting to read of her reactions to 9/11 and the fact that all the agents felt that they had personally let the country down by not uncovering the plot in advance. I would recommend this book to anyone considering joining the CIA and everyone else interested in learning more about the CIA and what it would be like to work for this agency.
