Death and the Maidens: Fanny Wollstonecraft and the Shelley Circle by Janet Todd
Death and the Maidens: Fanny Wollstonecraft and the Shelley Circle

Jane Norman, March 11, 2008

Whether you are a fan of Shelley's poetry or not you will enjoy this entertaining biography of the young romantic poet's elopement with Mary Shelley and the subsequent suicides of his first wife Harriett and Mary's half sister Fanny. (Harriet's suicide was blamed on Shelley's abandonment of her; Fanny's on her unrequited love for Shelley). Along the way you will read about the famous rendez-vous with Lord Byron which resulted in Mary Shelley's masterpiece "Frankenstein" being written. You will read about Shelley's circle of friends, enemies, lovers (platonic), and adventures. And you will learn about Fanny, the illegitimate daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft, the famous author of The Vindication of Women's Rights, who has until now taken a distant second place in literary history to her mother and half sister. I highly recommend this fun and entertaining book.

Generation Ageless: How Baby Boomers Are Changing the Way We Live Today and They're Just Getting Started by J Walker Smith
Generation Ageless: How Baby Boomers Are Changing the Way We Live Today and They're Just Getting Started

Jane Norman, March 2, 2008

If you were born between 1946 and 1964 then you are a "baby boomer," part of the incredible surge in the birth rate after World War II. Rather than retiring to Florida and being idle, you are more likely starting your own socially responsible company. Far from getting around with a walker, you are more likely training for a marathon or planning a wilderness trek. And instead being an eccentric old coot cooped up in your assisted living apartment, you are far more likely to be busy connecting with family, friends, community and the world. So are just some of the conclusions of this meticulously researched and useful book. We boomers have changed what it means to age in America, and have re-defined middle age and beyond.

The problem is that advertisers and marketers have not kept up with this trend. Boomers are 78 million strong, the dominant and largest generation in American history. Yet advertisers pay a premium for younger viewers on television, 30 % more per minute according to the authors, and persons under 49 are considered the "coveted" group. Presumably, boomers are set in their ways and will not try new products. GOOD GRIEF!!!

This book explains boomer trends, goals, shopping habits and patterns. It explains that we boomers are socially responsible and are more likely to buy from a socially responsible company and may in fact boycott one that is not. We are interested in connecting with community and family after a lifetime of pursuing "self." And of course we are interested in health, exercise and anti-aging products aimed at boomers who are indeed "ageless." We want to make a difference in the world, and have a sense of purpose that we want to get across.

So who should take a look at this book? Marketers and advertisers of course. Business students. And baby boomers who want to read and understand about their generation and know that they are not alone.

Adobe Photoshop Cs3 for Photographers: A Professional Image Editor's Guide to the Creative Use of Photoshop for the Macintosh and PC by Martin Evening
Adobe Photoshop Cs3 for Photographers: A Professional Image Editor's Guide to the Creative Use of Photoshop for the Macintosh and PC

Jane Norman, February 2, 2008

O.K. You have just upgraded from photoshop CS2 to photoshop CS3. Or...you have finally upgraded from photoshop elements to the latest version of photoshop. The problem is, the manual that comes with the software is unreadable, naturally, and there are so many photoshop books that you have no idea which one to choose. Well, fortunately for you I have spent a small fortune buying and testing many of them and found this one to be just right. Despite what the title says, "for photographers," this book is down right wonderful for beginners also. For example, it illustrates the different key commands in color, one for pcs and one for macs for each command. That makes it really easy to follow. It covers the basis in easy to follow steps and the more in depth coverage for serious photographers. It is awash with illustrations, photographs and easy to follow instructions. It is pricey, but no more so than others of its type, and it is very large and comprehensive. So I say, get this book above all the others out there.
