The Rachel Papers by Martin Amis
The Rachel Papers

Jed Cohen, August 4, 2012

Of a piece with Roth's Goodbye Columbus and Chabon's Mysteries of Pittsburgh, The Rachel Papers finds Amis at his pyrotechnic best (and he was only 25 when he wrote it!). The narrator, Charles Highway, is a precocious snot with a beating, romantic's heart; and for every pretension and self-indulgent remark, there's a shameful admission or deprecatory joke to win the reader over. I never go anywhere without this book, and it's the novel that sparked my Amis devotion. An incredible debut indeed.
