Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
Prayer for Owen Meany

Jeffrey Hitchings, November 13, 2008

Irving's stories are always filled with a motley crew of characters, and a healthy dose of historical events. Owen Meany is certainly no exception. Beginning in the 1940s, Irving tells the story of John Wheelwright's life and his friendship with Owen Meany, a man blessed with physical and spiritual gifts. Irving uses the Vietnam War, Christianity, and the absurdities of New England social rules as a backdrop for this hilarious and touching novel. It is just as relevant now, with our current wars, as it was in the 80s when he wrote it.

Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane
Shutter Island

Jeffrey Hitchings, August 27, 2008

A thrilling period mystery set on an island in Boston Harbor during a hurricane. This novel was written by the author of Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone, and it certainly holds up to his previous works. Hollywood is making a movie out of this book, so hurry up and read it.
