Rules of Civility by Amor Towles
Rules of Civility

Jeffrey Ricker, August 4, 2012

This book was recommended to me after I told a bookseller my favorite novel is THE GREAT GATSBY. Although the narrator is not as detached as Fitzgerald's Nick Carraway, I appreciated the elegant tone of this novel about pre-World War II New York society life as told from the perspective of an outsider making her way in. A great debut; I'm looking forward to Mr. Towles' next novel.

Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones
Silver Sparrow

Jeffrey Ricker, January 19, 2012

Stunning and beautiful, Silver Sparrow draws you in quietly at the beginning and keeps pulling you along breathlessly. Even when you know it will not end well, you can't resist. I wish every book I read could be this good.

With or Without You by Brian Farrey
With or Without You

Jeffrey Ricker, September 2, 2011

This was one of those books where, when you get toward the end, you can't decide whether you want to read faster, to find out how things are going to end, or read slower, because you want to make it last as long as possible. Farrey crafts an engaging story that will resonate with anyone who's ever felt like they don't fit in.
