Runaway Radical: A Young Man's Reckless Journey to Save the World by Amy Hollingsworth
Runaway Radical: A Young Man's Reckless Journey to Save the World

Jennifer Short, February 9, 2015

Everyone knows someone who has gone off to save the world. We hear the good stories but what happens to those who don't have a good experience overseas? In this book, Hollingsworth along with his mother tells his account of leaving the United States a vibrant, idealistic young man full of hopes and dreams of making life better for others. In a few short excruciating months he returns disillusioned and wants nothing more to do with helping others. He chronicles how he found himself after the experience as well as what crushed his spirit.

Ghost Boy: The Miraculous Escape of a Misdiagnosed Boy Trapped Inside His Own Body by Martin Pistorius
Ghost Boy: The Miraculous Escape of a Misdiagnosed Boy Trapped Inside His Own Body

Jennifer Short, February 9, 2015

For years Martin Pistorius was fully aware but no one knew it. He knew of the incessant children's programs his care home put in front of him. He knew he wanted to but his body wouldn't let him communicate. This is an amazing book of how someone who once was thought to have an IQ of less than 30 has become an IT guy and an international speaker by using adaptive communication. It's a story of triumph, and one of the best memoirs I've ever read.

Pandemic Board Game 2013 Revised Edition by Z-Man Games
Pandemic Board Game 2013 Revised Edition

Jennifer Short, May 2, 2014

Usually a reader, I was happy to see that Powells carries this game. It is an excellent game, enjoyed by young (about age 8) and adults alike. I have spent many hours playing this game, and a friend's son made an edict that any time I visit, I am not welcome if I don't bring this game! He's just as addicted to this game as me! Great fun, and very unique that everyone either loses or wins, very much a team effort!

The Blue Umbrella by Mike Mason
The Blue Umbrella

Jennifer Short, January 6, 2014

Zac Sparks' mother was struck by lightening. After her funeral, Zac was taken to Five Corners to live with his cruel aunties. This is a book that reminded me of bits of James and the Giant Peach and Narnia. I don't believe it's for younger children, but I found it a fascinating read, because Sky Porter holds a secret -- a big secret. And when the auntie's dada wants Mr. Porter's umbrella, all kinds of strange things are revealed. (Note: while this is published by a Christian publishing house, there is nothing overtly Christian in it except a Bible verse at the end, so I believe anyone of any faith would enjoy this with no problem.) I am looking forward to reading the sequel, and it's rare I read sequels -- one of the best fiction books I have read in a long time.

Ticket To Ride
Ticket To Ride

Jennifer Short, January 6, 2014

I love strategy games, and this is a favorite. Build your railroads along certain routes and earn extra points. Have the longest railroad and earn more points. Earn points with cards in your hands. This game is a family favorite and will be for years to come. Easy enough for a child to play but strategic enough for adults to get in a great competition to build their railroads -- and adults might even try to block others from completing their route! Fun for middle elementary through the oldest of adults! Great family game!
