Miami Blues (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard) by Charles Willeford
Miami Blues (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard)

I love this novel! Willeford had a unique take on the whole cop noir thing. Probably because he had seen the ugly side of humanity but managed to retain a sense of humor about the human condition. He's like Elmore Leonard but a little bit darker and more cynical. If you like hard boiled detectives, you need to read this novel.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (The Millennium Trilogy #1) by Stieg Larsson
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (The Millennium Trilogy #1)

John C, September 11, 2009

Smilla's Sense of Snow for the aughts. This book starts slow and brooding, as you would expect of any Scandinavian novel, but it quickly evolves into a real page turner. Sadly, the novelist passed away shortly after depositing his first three manuscripts with the publisher, so this novel is the first of three with no more on the way, but it's well worth the read. You'll become a fan anyway, so don't be the last one in your circle to read this brilliant novel.

After Dark, My Sweet (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard) by Jim Thompson
After Dark, My Sweet (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard)

Perhaps Thompson's greatest masterpiece. This book shows you everything that made this noir writer a master of the genre. A brilliant book. I wrote my Master's Thesis about this one. No joke!

Pipsqueak by Brian M. Wiprud
Pipsqueak

Taxidermy and wisecracks galore. What's not to love? This quasi-hard boiled detective novel is so much fun that you won't be able to stop turning the pages, but you'll be snickering all the way.
