I know Octavian Nothing is classified as an historical novel for "young readers," but never while I was reading this book did this cross my mind. Despite the main character's age, the language and story are quite "adult." Beautifully written, excellent plotting and characterization, wonderful narrative. I highly recommend this!
Fine storytelling from Patchett who finds engaging ways to weave together the lives of an opera singer, corporate execs, and a band of hapless terrorists.
McDonagh never ceases to surprise me with his language, his wit, and keen understanding of the human soul. He is the master of catching you off guard, of making you laugh in hysterics one moment and feel pummeled in the next. I read this play because the second in the trilogy, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, is being performed this season at Artists Rep in Portland. Whether read or seen, McDonagh's works are not to be missed!
