Twenty-One Balloons, the (Pmc) (Puffin Modern Classics) by William Pene Dubois
Twenty-One Balloons, the (Pmc) (Puffin Modern Classics)

I have so many fond memories of my 4th grade teacher reading this book to our class, that when I came across it on the bookshelf now (some 40 years later!) I just had to read it myself. I was NOT disappointed. Like Proust with his madeleine, I was transported. This is a magical mixture of fact and fiction, bits of science and geography, as Professor William Waterman Sherman relates his amazing Krakatoan adventure to the Western American Explorer's Club in San Fransisco. William Pene du Bois tells this story not only in colorful, engaging prose, but he adds an extra dimension with his own pen and ink drawings. I'm off to read this to my neighborhood 4th grade class!

Red Tent by Anita Diamant

This is an amazing story of the life of Dinah. Her father is Jacob, whose story, along with those of his brother, Esau, and father, Isaac, is told in the Old Testament of the Bible. She is only briefly mentioned there, but as Dinah tells her life's story, I experienced everything as though I were there with her. This is a very empowering, life-affirming book for women of all ages, and for men an oportunity to see life through a woman's eyes. I intend to share this book with both my daughter and my mother; we'll see if I can convince my husband to read it. ;)
