The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
The Pillars of the Earth

KDeardorff, August 24, 2007

Your new favorite novel. I first read this book about ten years ago (maybe more). I have to admit that it took me a while to get "into" it, but I almost never give up on a book once I've started it. I've always been very glad that I stuck with this one. Ken Follett is a master of characterization and in this novel outdoes even his usual talent for making you feel as if you know the characters personally. Ten years later, I still refer to this as one of my favorite novels ever (up there with To Kill A Mockingbird!). Do yourself a favor and force your way through the first few chapters - you'll be glad you did! I'm betting this will soon be added to your list of favorite novels as well.

The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver
The Bean Trees

KDeardorff, August 24, 2007

Fall in love with reading again. Kingsolver's characterizations are amazing. You feel as if you are living the lives of these characters along with them. When she describes the oppressive heat of Tucson you actually feel as if you are there. Taylor, the "main" character is a young girl who becomes an instant mother to a 3-yr old. She feels overwhelmed and inadequate, but as pointed out by one of her "guardian angels" all new mothers feel that way. You'll soon fall in love with Taylor, Turtle, Lou Ann and all the other characters in and around the Jesus is Lord tire store.

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
The Secret Life of Bees

KDeardorff, August 24, 2007

Wow! What a pleasant surprise. This book was recommended to me by my mother, a bookseller, who usually is "spot on" with her recommendations. This one was no exception. I have to admit that the title and synopsis didn't appeal to me much at first but by the 2nd page I was hooked! This is a book you won't soon forget.
