Who would think that a German Protestant professor would write a comprehensive, concise, and captivating "Introduction to the Talmud and Midrash" that would be perused by many Jewish and Christian seminary students and laymen alike [in the original German, and since 1931 in English]. Kudos to Professors Gunter Stemberger & Markus Bockmuehl for updating this classic to reflect recent scholarship and the Internet Age.

An unlikely duo, Conservative Rabbi Susan Grossman and Orthodox activist Rivka Haut, have edited an intriguing "Daughters of the King: Women and the Synagogue: A Survey of History, Halakhah, Contemporary Realities". The lively and learned essays speak to Jewish women [and men] of all denominations.

The best book yet on the hidden codes in the Bible and what they mean for us, in my opinion, is Dr Jeffrey Satinover's "Cracking the Bible Code". Unlike other journalistic studies on this subject, MIT and Harvard trained Dr Satinover utilizes his analytical and communication skills to cogently demonstrate some of hidden codes in the first five books of the Bible. He makes reading scientifically proven facts as griping as reading a good detective novel.

Did you know that besides the Warsaw ghetto uprising, some Jews managed to sucessfully fight the nazis and survive WWII? "The Bielski Brothers: The True Story of Three Men" is the exciting story of these brave souls who kept about hundreds of Jews alive in the woods and attacted German troops. A major 2009 movie was based in part on this moving book by Peter Duffy.

Kudos to retired Oxford University Professor of Jewish Studies Geza Vermes for his accurate and readable translations of the many ancient Hebrew and Aramaic texts found in caves near the Dead Sea over 50 years ago. His general introduction and brief introductions to each document put everything in proper perspective.
