Amazing Adventures of Cavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon
Amazing Adventures of Cavalier & Clay

Karen B, January 6, 2013

Chabon is an amazing writer. This was the sort of book I picked up only because of its glowing reviews and not because I thought it suited my taste or had any relevance to me. Boy, was I wrong! Not about the glowing reviews, which it entirely deserves, but because it has relevance for any American or anyone who's chased a dream, pursued a goal, or been in love. And the writing is so delicious, so evocative, so concise--it's the kind of writing that makes you annoy your significant other by constantly reading choice bits aloud, and the kind of writing that, despite the annoyance, inspires your significant other to read the book as soon as you've finished it.

All the Names by Jose Saramago
All the Names

Karen B, September 10, 2011

I started reading this before Saramago died, and now there won't be any more new novels from him. This made the book, and the ending, all the more poignant.

I love an ending that makes me want to start the book all over again because I know it will only deepen with rereading, and this was one of those books.

Just Kids by Patti Smith
Just Kids

Karen B, January 2, 2011

I have to admit that I'm a big Patti Smith fan, so definitely biased. But this simple, direct, and touching story of the strange and beautiful relationship between Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe during their "once upon a time" haunted me for days. I highly recommend it for any artists-in-waiting.
