In the Woods by Tana French
In the Woods

Karen Lenzen, August 4, 2012

In the Woods is written from the viewpoint of an untrustworthy narrator (he admits from the start he is a liar). It is a murder mystery, so the reader is aware the topic will be disturbing; especially because the subjects are the deaths of children and a forest. The descriptions are beautiful and vivid. The story and characters are arresting. There are two horrific crimes; an old and a new. One isn't resolved. It adds to the eeriness by leaving the reader hanging but also, it's a kind of violation. Evidently there are sequels.
