I Am a Pencil: A Teacher, His Kids, and Their World of Stories

Karin, April 21, 2007

Swope's time with these kids is life-changing for them. His interaction with them and his teaching techniques are fine examples for all teachers.

Alma Rose: Vienna to Auschwitz by Richard Newman
Alma Rose: Vienna to Auschwitz

Karin, April 21, 2007

While the writing is not outstanding and the chronology a bit confusing at times, this is a fascinating book. The title tells you what is going to happen, but everything that happens along the way is interesting. One can only imagine what her career would have been like if she had lived past the war.

The Book of Salt by Monique Truong
The Book of Salt

Karin, April 21, 2007

The Book of Salt has the most beautiful prose you will ever read. Read it for the story, but savor the language along the way.

Escape on the Pearl: The Heroic Bid for Freedom on the Underground Railroad by Mary Kay Ricks
Escape on the Pearl: The Heroic Bid for Freedom on the Underground Railroad

Karin, February 9, 2007

The Escape on the Pearl is one of those stories that has been almost forgotten but shouldn't be because it illuminates the American character and experience in myriad ways, from the desperation of ordinary men and women to lives lives of dignity, to the determination of some to deny them such a humble goal, to the actions of prominent men and women to both help and hinder. Ricks has meticulously researched census records, letters, diaries, and land records to bring us this beautifully detailed and written story.
