Farthing reminds me intensely of Peter Dickinson, who had some upperclass British "alternate histories" of his own with King and Joker and Skeleton-in-Waiting. Alternating viewpoints between the daughter's and the man from Scotland Yard's works nicely to give us a multi-dimensional picture of Walton's England -- lets us see behind some curtains and around corners. What we find behind the civilized facade is very, very frightening. Highly recommended.
