When She Woke by Hillary Jordan
When She Woke

Kathy Chiocca, January 1, 2013

I didn't know what to expect from this book because I hadn't seen any reviews before I read it. I had heard that the book was a retelling of "A Scarlet Letter" but nothing else.
I really liked the book. I read it in two sittings, something I had not done in a long time. I liked the concept of a dystopian future civilization as the backdrop. And I enjoyed how the author explored the feminist and political themes in the book. I thought her depiction of 'chroming' as punishment for offenses was novel. I also thought her descriptions of what was a crime in her futuristic world was quite provocative. Her examination of religion was without seeming prejudice, leaving a right or wrong assesment up to the reader. I liked that when I finished the book I really was not really sure where the author stood on her topic of morality. I thought she left a few questions unanswered but maybe that is what she intended.
