Capital by John Lanchester

Kay Jennings, January 14, 2013

The author of Capital, John Lanchester, was new to me in 2012. I picked up this novel primarily because I lived in London briefly a couple of decades ago, and I like to keep up with the city. Most of the action in Capital could have easily taken place on the street I lived on in northwest London, and every time I opened this delicious book I was transported back.

Beyond the London familiarity, however, this novel brought the 2008 financial collapse to life, and gave a tragic, sad, and sometimes funny look at the impact on what felt like real people...people whose lives you can't help but get caught up in.

I envy those of you who knew about Lanchester before me, but I now have the pleasure of seeking out his earlier works.
