Are You My Mother? (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books) by P. D. Eastman
Are You My Mother? (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books)

Kelly Godfrey, October 3, 2009

Every now and then I'll encounter a parent who doesn't know this book. Please read it to your toddler. I remember clearly the giggles and head shakes of my (now grown-up) son as we read all the crazy ideas a baby bird has about who/what his mother might be. I worried about a mother who would leave him to hatch all alone!

My son enjoyed other PD Eastman books, but this is far and away the one I'd be sure to have on my child's bookshelf.

Seekers #01: Seekers #1: The Quest Begins by Erin Hunter
Seekers #01: Seekers #1: The Quest Begins

Kelly Godfrey, August 6, 2009

I bought this book when it first came out because I had a student who was absolutely in love with Hunter's Warriors series and I thought I'd find something good for my classroom library. After being introduced, in the first three chapters, to young bears of different species, all with various challenges of finding food and dealing with habitat issues, I became pretty involved in their stories. This first novel touches on global warming (increasingly early spring thaws) and what happens when human and bear habitats intersect.

There is a mystical element in a shape-shifting entity that helps the bears come together (as in some Native American tales), but it actually offers a little comic relief at one point.

There's a lot of loss and sadness in the story and I even shed a tear or two. I liked it well enough that I'll have to read at least one of the sequels, and I definitely would recommend it to students in grades 5 (or 4) and up.
