A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken
A Severe Mercy

Kenneth Bernstein, August 4, 2012

A profound book in its own right, it is also important reading for anyone who is a fan of C. S. Lewis, especially those who have read his A Grief Observed about his own loss of Joy Gresham. The author of this book had a mentor-mentee relationship with Lewis, and went through a loss of his own. Highly recommended

The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education by Diane Ravitch
The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education

Kenneth Bernstein, January 1, 2011

This may be the single most significant book on American public education in the past decade. Ravitch does a masterful job taking people through the history of what has been happening to our schools, and raises all the appropriate concerns about what we might be about to lose if we do not quickly change the course of our national educational policy.

Making the Grades: My Misadventures in the Standardized Testing Industry by Todd Farley
Making the Grades: My Misadventures in the Standardized Testing Industry

Kenneth Bernstein, October 24, 2009

This book will open your eyes to how inaccurate the results of many standardized tests are. And as you read you will begin to realize how much profit testing companies make compared to the value they give.
