Flying to America 1st Edition

Kenneth, February 21, 2008

Just when you thought all of the Donald Barthelme stories had passed by your eyes...here is a collection of fine stories and even cartoons that will amaze and intrigue you.

A Fraction of the Whole: A Novel by Steve Toltz
A Fraction of the Whole: A Novel

Kenneth, February 18, 2008

A Fraction of the Whole is a mix of A Confederacy of Dunces and a pie chart from an insane asylum as depicted by National Geographic...confusing (a plus), funny, and great.

Love Without: Stories by Jerry Stahl
Love Without: Stories

Kenneth, July 15, 2007

My wife paid Jerry Stahl's Love Without: Stories the ultimate compliment: "Would you stop laughing and turn out the light!?"...followed by, "Stop saying 'Whoa!' and go read it downstairs!" When a short story collection jumps from Dick Cheney, princess phones, and (holy hula Joyce) 'Finnegan's Waikiki,' what's a poor boy to do?

Memorial: A Novel by Bruce Wagner
Memorial: A Novel

Kenneth, January 4, 2007

Bruce Wagner continues to wave the Donald Barthelme flag in his novel Memorial. The Herlihy family's aspirations and fears unfold like a surrealistic personals section of a large city newspaper. Humor is followed by tragedy, and in the usual Wagnerian slant, resolved in off-center comedy. Save yourself a trip to L.A. -- get the margaritas a'swirlin', crank up Jonesy's Jukebox, and read Memorial.

Not Enough Indians: A Novel by Harry Shearer
Not Enough Indians: A Novel

Kenneth, November 20, 2006

Harry Shearer's characters should have expanding head bands over his deft handling of eccentric personality traits in Not Enough Indians.
