Whitehead creates beautiful prose and a haunting world inhabited by noir characters and allegories on racism. If you doubt you can read a whole book about elevator inspectors (I did), then you should know these elevator inspectors operate more like a mafia you never heard of. The main character may or may not be named after Lila Watson who was from the Australian Aboriginal Group, who is quoted "“If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.”
I haven't been moved by a book like this in years. One of the best out there about race, politics, inner city corruption, and how it all moves, be it up, or down.
