The Sixteen Pleasures by Robert Hellenga
The Sixteen Pleasures

To find a book about a book conservator who is off to Florence, Italy to save books after a flood in 1966 was this Oregonian's book lover's dream!

Written with religious overtones, moderated by healthy doubt and dubious overtones of mistrust and intrigue, and infused with forbidden sexuality made the novel a late night page turner. The main character was accessible and the story helped me learn much about how a book is constructed, how it can be damaged by moisture and how the restoration of delicate pages can mean the difference between knowledge and power, and good and evil.

This little novel carries a mighty punch. It is a favorite of mine and one I have passed on to many.
