The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher by Debby Applegate
The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher

Kirk, July 16, 2007

A highly readable biography of a man who changed the way we practice and view Christianity in America. His orations and preachings throughout the country made him a 19th century superstar. The scandal late in his life is reminiscent of Jim Bakker. Applegate won the Pulitzer Prize for this biography.

Sacred Games: A Novel by Vikram Chandra
Sacred Games: A Novel

Kirk, January 25, 2007

Even though this book is 928 pages long, I read it in a weekend and wished it had gone on for another 928 pages. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, while trying to come up with the solution to the mystery. Chandra has written a wonderful book that will appeal to a large audience if they'll accept that the length is worth the time they'll invest.

The Shakespeare Wars: Clashing Scholars, Public Fiascoes, Palace Coups by Ron Rosenbaum
The Shakespeare Wars: Clashing Scholars, Public Fiascoes, Palace Coups

Kirk, October 29, 2006

A scholar analyzes Shakespeare in a way that the rest of us can understand and appreciate. "Hamlet" and "King Lear" make a little more sense, and we learn how the plays changed over the years.
