Protecting the Gift: Keeping Children and Teenagers Safe (and Parents Sane) by Gavin De Becker
Protecting the Gift: Keeping Children and Teenagers Safe (and Parents Sane)

Laura, May 6, 2007

Wasn't it Spiderman's uncle who shared this thought, something along the line that "with a "gift" comes great responsibility?"
Gavin De Becker provides useful information to do just that. Most parents/caregivers want to keep the children under their care safe, however may not how to do it beyond fastening their seatbelts or wearing a bicycle helmet. This book provides helpful information to go a bit further and help a parent provide a safe environment (without turning the child or parent into a total fearful reclusive!)

The Wet Engine: Exploring the Mad Wild Miracle of the Heart by Brian Doyle
The Wet Engine: Exploring the Mad Wild Miracle of the Heart

Laura, October 11, 2006

I don't know how Brian Doyle managed to put so much heart into such a tiny book and fit in so many long, long, long sentences and make it sound so natural as if he were on the other end of a phone conversation, while making me want to meet all the many, many people he introduced in the book, which maybe I did meet them, actually, so I'm glad he did. Yes, I'm glad.

Shower of Heavenly Roses: Stories of Intercession of St. Therese of Lisisieux by Elizabeth Ficocelli
Shower of Heavenly Roses: Stories of Intercession of St. Therese of Lisisieux

Laura, October 3, 2006

I am not Catholic, but I was inspired by this book about St. Therese and the ways she has given signs to people that their prayers were heard. It is a compilation of many quick, touching stories, including an account from Olympic figure skater, Tara Lapinsky. Most of those who told of their experiences after praying through St. Therese received roses or rose petals. I think readers will be influenced by these life-changing experiences.
