The Color Purple by Alice Walker
The Color Purple

Laura Harrington, November 24, 2009

Reading this book takes some effort. You need to stop and reread some areas to be sure you have the content correctly interpreted. It is worth every ounce of effort you have to put into it.
Having read this before the movie came out I was not sure I could watch the movie and make it through. It brings up emotional responses whether you are black or not and whether you are a woman or not.
As a result of this book I feel like I have a much better appreciation for black women of the time and place and stature in the American historical experience.

Obliviously On He Sails: The Bush Administration in Rhyme by Calvin Trillin
Obliviously On He Sails: The Bush Administration in Rhyme

Laura Harrington, November 21, 2009

Mr. Trillin has a uniquely unmatched talent to turn everything you were thinking into the words you wish you had. The truth, the rhymes, the political satire all come together in a delicious soup. When was the last time you found your self reading an amusing poem or story and then suddenly without warning laughing out load. From the Nanny Dick references to the statement "Oblviously on he sails, with marks not as good as Quales", well, this book will do it for you. What a gift laughter.

Left Behind #01: Left Behind: A Novel of the Earth's Last Days by Tim Lahaye
Left Behind #01: Left Behind: A Novel of the Earth's Last Days

Laura Harrington, November 20, 2009

This is the first in a series of books that you will just have to read once you have read the first. The writing is current and enticing for any adult. Although this is written as Christian Fiction, if I had not known that or not been aware of the biblical rapture reference, I might have thought this was just great Science Fiction.
