This Is Between Us by Kevin Sampsell
This Is Between Us

Lauren Perez, November 4, 2013

Devoured this book in a night--it combines guilty, voyeuristic pleasure with great prose. You ride in the narrator's head through the beginning of a relationship, its near dissolution and ultimate tenderness. Sampsell writes so honestly it feels reckless.

Promising Young Women by Suzanne Scanlon
Promising Young Women

I'm fairly certain Dorothy Project can do no wrong, and if you're looking for proof of that read this book. Or if you're just looking for a smart, non-romantic portrait of mental illness. Or just a good book. Elegantly written, Promising Young Women reveals the Lizzie (the narrator's) experience in and out of psychiatric hospitals. It's arranged almost like a book of short stories, slowly building on one another. I read it in on the train, and was so enthralled by the book that I ended up missing my stop.

A Carnivore's Inquiry by Sabina Murray
A Carnivore's Inquiry

Lauren Perez, January 20, 2010

I feel that this book is often overshadowed by her other, better known book The Caprices, but is at least as wonderful a read. Gripping, funny and at times verging on frenetic poetry it's a fantastic read. Normally I hate describing books in reference to other authors, but I would shelve this book next to Poe, Highsmith and Nabokov if that is a useful referent.
