'On Beauty', Zadie Smith's 21st Century version of 'Howards End', is a deep & rewarding novel of the differences & attractions between 2 families, one African-American, the other British-Trinidadian, of warring art experts and the complicated relations that grow between their children & wives. More than an homage to the original masterpiece on British families of differing social classes, threads from the E. M. Forster classic like the ramifications of British Imperialism & the question of who will inherit what's truly important are woven into a modern story full of bright colors which range across the black experience, the true value of art & the limitations of the American dream.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
The Book Thief

LaurieLee, November 16, 2013

"The Book Thief" is a great book & an even better story that's heartbreaking without being depressing & full of hope yet told from Death's perspective. Narrated by Death, it's the story of a girl who can't read but steals a book & a man who can't help being kind even when he knows it'll hurt everyone he loves. Death is a natural fit as narrator for the story of ordinary people during the everyday horror of Nazi Germany but Death's reassuring & surprisingly charming voice makes this book memorable beyond the ordinary.

The Castle of Llyr (Chronicles of Prydain) by Lloyd Alexander
The Castle of Llyr (Chronicles of Prydain)

LaurieLee, August 28, 2012

The entire Prydain series is great choice for kids who'd love an exciting fantasy adventure that's much shorter than a Harry Potter book and "The Castle of Llyr" is especially fun since the girl gets to be the hero this time. Full of magic & peril with snappy banter and a fast pace, this was a childhood favorite of mine. More exciting than Narnia, it was Lloyd Alexander books that eventually led me to Tolkien as a kid & I can't think of a better series to make young fans of magical adventure into life-long readers.

The Black Cauldron: The Chronicles of Prydain, Book Two (Chronicles of Prydain #02) by Lloyd Alexander
The Black Cauldron: The Chronicles of Prydain, Book Two (Chronicles of Prydain #02)

The entire Prydain series is great choice for kids who'd love an exciting fantasy adventure that's not nearly as long as a Harry Potter book. 'The Black Cauldron' can stand on it's own as a classic hero's journey that reads like a non-stomp romp with deeper themes than most "adult" fantasy fiction. More exciting than Narnia, it was Lloyd Alexander books that eventually led me to Tolkien as a kid & I can't think of a better series to make young fans of magical adventure into life-long readers.

Sex on the Moon: The Amazing Story Behind the Most Audacious Heist in History

I love it when a non-fiction book is more entertaining and unbelievable than a novel! This is a great read and so much fun!
