Pity the Nation: The Abduction of Lebanon by Robert Fisk
Pity the Nation: The Abduction of Lebanon

Lebanese American, July 26, 2006

Robert Fisk has an understanding of the Middle East matched by no other westerner. He understands that there are no black and white situations, and, as a writer, he is able to convey the complexity of the region with clarity. He has lived in Beirut for years and understands the various cultures, the religions, the language, and the politics of the region. Fisk is straightforward in dealing with the actions of the United States, Israel, and Syria in Lebanon, as well as those of the Lebanese Christian Maronite groups, the Sunni groups, and the Shiia's. (I had the opportunity to see a lecture he gave on US policy and actions in Iraq before the war and it was powerful. He continues to report on the region in the Independent and on various websites, although when he reports from Iraq, he doesn't hide in a hotel all day and send an Iraqi out or rely on US government press releases. He reports from the ground.)
