Another winner from Seal Press! Click is a great compilation of essays from "Third Wave" feminists. The suject matter covers everything from gender binaries to footwear, all delivered in well-written and thoughtful essays from some very inspiring women. Reading this compilation was definitely a rousing reminder of the feminist movement's great victories and the work yet to come.
Absolutely delightful read! If you are an Alice Walker fan, take this little book as an opportunity to drink in more of her personal life and musings. Never read her before? Jump right in with this humorous, insightful book full of love and learning. Once you meet the chickens (Rufus, Agnes of God, Gertrude Stein, and so on), life will never quite look the same...
Just gorgeous! Shields spins a tale that brings to mind books like Everything Is Illuminated, One Hundred Years of Solitude, and Middlesex. Generations are represented with simultaneous gravity and an air of mischievous "que sera sera." The reader moves through Daisy Stone's life with her in an intimate and detailed way, experiencing the years in a sensual, palpable manner. The Sone Diaries is a gift and a pleasure to read.
No matter how much time goes by, Valencia's story stays fresh. Michelle Tea depicts her life in 1990's San Francisco throught a lens of excitement, grittiness, and that nothing-to-lose joie de vivre. The characters ring true, and the events strike a chord with anyone who's ever lived on the egde, even a little bit. Read Valencia!
The Urban Cookbook is a substantial and shiny book full of goodness. Yes, it has recipes, but even more exciting are the culture pieces that coordinate with every city. Art, fashion, music, and the people putting all this creativity out there are profiled and interviewed. It's a great read, with the bonus of recipes to evoke the feel of each city included.
