There is no one like M.F.K. Fisher for instructing on how to hold your head high during hard times. The wolf she is cooking is the one who is at the door. (And she was writing in the time and place of food rationing.) She cooks him well, with advice on the relationship between discipline and appetites, with recipes, and with spirit. If the children are happy about Obama's election, writing letters to him won't change that. As I haven't read the book, I don't know all the advice, skepticism, and recognition of difficulties it contains.
I do know one kindergartner who says, "It must be hard to be president. You have to get dressed up all the time."
