When I first got this book I was actively reading three other books. I decided to read the first chapter of Pacific Heights just to see if I would enjoy it. I didn't pick up the other books until I finished Harper's book. It's obviously an engaging and suspenseful mystery.
A young midwife from Albany, New York, is desperate to become a medical doctor during the years of the Civil War. The War Between the States becomes a time we can see, feel and smell between the covers of this research-based, well-written tale. Sentences like “They were still, like him, only half a moment past innocence” will take your breath away like a minie ball zinging past your miraculously untouched ear. Historical characters, including Abraham Lincoln and Clara Barton, have roles in the book’s believable and carefully crafted action. Each chapter is rich with facts, description and pathos. If you are reader with interests in medical history, woman's history or the Civil War, this is the book for you - and - you will want to share it with your friends.
This is a great read for a hot summer's day. It's about the development of friendship and trust, and finding adventure in a new place. A mature student who has just finished the fourth grade should love this book, if they have already developed a taste for mysteries. And most adventurous readers fifth grade and above, will pick up this book and not be able to put it down. Who can resist a spooky closed amusement park? I'm glad I read this book outside in the sun!
