I have never read a book like this. I can't imagine I ever will (until I read this book again). Mr. Wallace's book is infinitely entertaining. Be prepared to give some time and effort and you will be rewarded.
I have never enjoyed a memoir more. I have been a Paul Auster fan for many years, yet I approached this book carefully. I was hooked on contact. Auster writes non-fiction with the same comfortable prose as his novels. He is able to create a sense of the common from the unreal coincidences that fill his life. There is much in this collection I will not forget.
Reading Barthelme's stories is, in one way, like opening a nested doll--each is its own surprising treasure. The difference being that each story is unique and unpredictable. This was my first encounter with Barthelme, and I approached with the uncertainty, based on reviews, that he would be unreadable. I could not have been more happily wrong.
