Approximate Continuum Comics by Lewis Trondheim
Approximate Continuum Comics

I love much of Trondheim translations. I'm a Francophile, so I probably 'get' the French sensibility, but I'd venture to guess that even those less than enamored with the Frogs will have plenty to enjoy. I've got it tagged with lots of stickies to go back & re-read. That's how good it is.

Bonus feature - additional feed/push-back from those he has caricatured! Ah, those French ...

Simply Brilliant.

New Yorker features great 1-shots, but this is best collection yet.

Can't recommend highly enough. Really!

The Book of Five Rings: A Graphic Novel by Sean Michael Wilson
The Book of Five Rings: A Graphic Novel

It could be worse ... but not by much.

Poor drawings (but I've seen much worse). I'll assume that translations are correct, but if so, adaptation should have considered more bridge-work to make transitions better.

Sigh ... far too many poor graphic publications these days ... makes Marvel/DC superhero stuff look good again. There must be better out there.

Having seen Mifune movie & this claiming to be adaptation - couldn't be further from the truth.

Just sayin'

Great artwork & history!

What keeps it from being a '5' then? Editing of word balloons - too many misplaced words & letters. As I've noted elsewhere editing has gone downhill as apparent cost-cutting measure. When I worked at Dark Horse, editing was very important & we strove to deliver top quality. Those were the days ...

Stargazing Dog by Takashi Murakami
Stargazing Dog

Very Good - thoughtful & good illustration.

But ... flipped translation from the Japanese, and a few places where Romanesque letters appear backwards. Needs a bit more editing, like most American manga nowadays. If you're going to flip artwork in English format, go to Studio Proteus/Dark Horse publications from the last century (1990s - ah, the good 'ol days ... ). nbm ComicsLit has done better in the past, but I suppose costs enter into the equation a bit much now.
