The Last of His Kind: The Life and Adventures of Bradford Washburn, America's Boldest Mountaineer by David Roberts
The Last of His Kind: The Life and Adventures of Bradford Washburn, America's Boldest Mountaineer

MAWashburn, November 17, 2009

I was drawn to this book because my maiden name is Washburn and my family has been traced back to the time of the Mayflower. Bradford Washburn was first published in a journal when he was all of eight years old. It was a lesson in how to fish and his message was about conservation. He was a pioneer as far as developing new techniques in mountain climbing as well as an accomplished self-taught photographer/cartographer. His wife accompanied him on many of his expeditions and her story is an intriguing as his. The accounts of the first ascents on a number of mountains in Alaska were described in great detail as far as the challenges they faced and the determination required to be successful. The photos are incredible and speak to his passion for the mountains and mountaineering.
