A gripping story about the bust of football player Michael Vick's brutal dogfighting operation and the aftermath for the seized dogs. In a departure from the typical practice of euthanizing dogs recovered from dogfighting busts, some of the Bad Newz kennel dogs were rescued and rehabilitated. After the torture and abuse these dogs suffered at the hands of Vick and his associates, it's all the more impressive that some have managed, with the help of dedicated rescuers, to start new lives as cherished pets and even as therapy dogs. Sports Illustrated writer Jim Gorant doesn't flinch from showing the heart of darkness within dogfighting, but he also spotlights the heroic actions of the veterinarians, lawyers, rescue groups and others who worked tirelessly to give these dogs a second chance.
