I read Suite Francaise without knowing the author's final fate. I found the book engrossing and profoundly moving in its relating of events during WWII in France. The fleeing citizens of Paris in the face of the approaching Nazis were shown in all their humanity. The understanding and genuine compassion shown in the depiction of the occupation was extraordinary. When I finished the novel and then read the account of the author's fate I experienced a genuine sense of shock and loss. Having read the book without even realizing that she was Jewish or that she perished in a concentration camp, I was amazed at how Nemirovsky had managed such an account of life under Nazi occupation. This book is one of the finest I have read in years.
