The story of Frankenstein has remained one of the most iconic figures of horror for several reasons, but some of the strongest and most compelling have been diluted and even drowned out through the manipulation of popular culture. One of the most prevalent and heartbreaking themes of the original tale is the danger and destruction that comes with ultimate knowledge, in this case, the divine secret of human creation. It is not the grotesque nature of the monster himself that provides the greatest horror and emotional distress, but the way in wich the author exposes the torment from both the blasphemous being and his creator and allows the reader to empathize with their individual reasons for despair.This classic work remains ever-resonant because of the emotional conflict with which the reader is met, and its application to humanity as a whole. Frankenstein is a story that will not only thrill, but provide a study in ethics and morality which is undeniably enriching for any who read it.

"Picky" describes me perfectly when it comes to all matters of preference, most particularly, literature. That is why i was caught by delightful surprise after immersing myself in the tales of this small collection after purchasing it on a curious impulse. Regarded as one of the greatest authors in the supernatural horror genre by non-other than H.P. Lovecraft, Algernon Blackwood does not fail to live up to the claim. Blackwood posesses an uncanny ability to maintain a gripping sense of suspense throughout the entirety of each tale, as well as enhancing the already enthralling sensory experience of the reader through stunning imagery. The stories in this carefully selected anthology will send the reader on a contemplative and surprisingly philosophical adventure spurred by the horrifying and mind-boggling concepts with which they are infused.

As an avid reader of H.P. Lovecraft, i highly recommend this anthology for its many assets. Not only does it boast an expansive collection of the authors tales, but includes explanatory notes on each text by arguably the greatest authority on Lovecraft, S.T. Joshi, unfinished but nonetheless riveting fragments by Lovecraft, and finally, "Supernatural Horror in Literature", one of the most important essays on the genre by the master of horror himself. This edition is by far one of the most complete collections, thus one of the most rewarding. A must-have for any fan of supernatural or cosmic horror.
