How far from Austerlitz? :Napoleon, 1805-1815
How far from Austerlitz? :Napoleon, 1805-1815

Marbot, April 30, 2007

This is an extremely impressive book and a must for anyone who wants to know about both Napoleon and his campaigns. Horne writes in a very approachable, readable style and manages to convey the excitement of history without sensationalising his subject. He seems to possess real insight into Napoleon's psyche and his descriptions left me both impressed and appalled at the actions of this brilliant, yet deeply flawed individual.

Horne examines Napoleon's unswerving ambition, refusal to be discouraged and monumental greed and backs it up with convincing evidence. He also gives vivid descriptions of the battles and explains how even a military genius will eventually slip if he pushes his luck too far. If you want to know why Napoleon fell from power - read this book. A modern classic.
