A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah
A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier

Mark Jackett, January 2, 2010

This is a beautifully crafted, powerful story. Beah starts with a brief but devastating exchange in which his American classmates ask him about his experiences, and then takes us back to his happy and peaceful life in Sierra Leone. It is this glimpse of his life before the war that makes what comes later so tragic. In all of the gruesome, terrifying detail, Beah shows us the absolute horror of child soldiers, and how imperative it is that the international community puts an end to this practice. Along the way, he honors the memory of his friends and family, some of whom did not make it out alive. This book should be read by all people who care about their fellow human beings.
