Secrets of the Witch World #2: The Magestone by Andre Norton
Secrets of the Witch World #2: The Magestone

Marlena, March 20, 2011

This second book of the Secrets of the Witch World trilogy gives more explanations about the beginnings of war and how enemies find they have more in common than they ever could have guessed. The unanswered questions will hopefully be resolved in the final book in the series.

Nimisha's Ship by Anne Mccaffrey
Nimisha's Ship

Marlena, June 7, 2010

This is a fun, fast read. Anne McCaffrey develops agreeable and believable characters and puts them in tough situations. Their logic and planning gets them in the clear and getting even with idiots is a happy by-product.

Race Across Alaska: First Woman to Win the Iditarod Tells Her Story by Libby Riddles
Race Across Alaska: First Woman to Win the Iditarod Tells Her Story

Marlena, January 16, 2009

I like the daily journal format. The page layout allows inserted text with story related facts and insights, just where they need to appear. This is a story of luck, courage, instinct and trust. It's much more about dogs and their musher than the fact the musher is a woman. The book is also a page turner!

Winterdance: The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod by Gary Paulsen
Winterdance: The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod

Marlena, January 15, 2009

I'm a fan of the Iditarod and this true story about the coming of age of one musher and his decision to run the Last Great Race made me laugh out loud and shed some tears. The story of his 1985 race illustrates how much (and why) the race rules have evolved through the years. If you love dogs and nature, this is the book for you.

Uncharted Stars by Andre Norton

Marlena, April 4, 2008

This space story from 1969 is packed with aliens, hard luck and intrigue. It also has a surprise ending. Don't let the date put you off, the plot and characters are timeless. I read most of it in one afternoon, couldn't put it down.
