This Twain story, along with my other favorite childhood classics, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," "Charlotte's Web," and strangely enough, "The Caine Mutiny," is an enduring joyful reading experience. What characters, what eloquent colloqial language; they transport me to Hannibal, the powerful Mississipp, and the adventure of adolescent freedom.

We found this book when our granddaughter died. It helped us a lot. We liked it because the ideas were simply presented. It's a "How to Grieve" book, but you aren't bogged down by a lot of text. Another advantage is that it appeals to all ages. I can't count the number of copies our family has bought since to give to others who are grieving. It's a great recipe for helping you deal with your grief.

A book that brings you face to face with the fact that people doing wonderful things can be brought down and ruined by one event. The heroic midwife of the title clings to her belief in her actions while dealing with hostile press and lawyers. The effect on her teenage daughter is surprising and profound.
