My husband bought this series after we saw the film version of _The Golden Compass_ and then suggested that I read it; I'm glad he did. The first book is by far better than the film version, and the second and third books build on the first in a very satisfying way, with one of the most inventive group of alien intelligences in the third book that I've seen in a long time. I would recommend the books for mature kids as well as adult readers who are open to some challenging ideas.
