The One: The Life and Music of James Brown by R J Smith
The One: The Life and Music of James Brown

Mary Capps, August 5, 2012

This is an amazing overview of the Hardest Working Man in Show Business. After reading about his beginnings, I'm truly surprised at the heights he reached, his incredible business savvy, and his personal dysfunction. My recommendation? Get up offa that thing and read this incredibly well-researched and well-written biography!

Republic, Lost: How Money Corrupts Congress--And a Plan to Stop It by Lawrence Lessig
Republic, Lost: How Money Corrupts Congress--And a Plan to Stop It

Mary Capps, January 1, 2012

Once again, Lessig is a voice of reason, but also again, few seem to hear that voice. Lessig's Tells elucidate how this country has gone from being for the people, by the people to for the moneyed, by the moneyed. His solutions are simple: campaign reform, campaign reform, campaign reform, campaign reform! This nonpartisan take on restoring the government to the citizens is not a new idea, but his ideas about how this might be accomplished are well thought out, although I personally don't agree with his suggestion that the Occupy Movement come together with the Tea Party Movement for one simple reason: far too many politicians who are part of the current problem have aligned themselves with the Tea Party Movement and, in fact, seem to manipulate it for their own gain. So I cannot support that union unless and until those influences are scrubbed clean. But, still and all, this is an excellent read and I highly recommend it!
