The Race Beat: The Press, the Civil Rights Struggle, and the Awakening of a Nation by Gene Roberts
The Race Beat: The Press, the Civil Rights Struggle, and the Awakening of a Nation

Pretty gripping, good historical overview of major events in the Civil Rights movement, from 1950s on. Important to note: it's about the press, both Black and white press, during this time, so its perspective is not from "inside" the movement. Also, it's mostly about the white press - over the course of the movement, black reporters were denied access to these big stories more and more, and through more and more violent means. Still, I find it unfortunate that the authors begin by stressing the importance of the Black press and introducing many of the important Black-owned and -run newspapers around the South, but then give less and less insight into what these papers and their reporters were covering, as the authors focus more and more on the biggest stories to hit the North. Nonetheless, it's a fascinating read - I didn't expect to get more than halfway through it, but I can't put it down.
