State by State: A Panoramic Portrait of America by Matt Weiland and Sean Wilsey
State by State: A Panoramic Portrait of America

Matthew Silva, September 27, 2008

An absolutely fabulous book. 50 essays by 50 writers, each writer tackling a different state. The roll call or writers who showed up for this anthology is impressive: Dave Eggers, Louise Erdrich, William T. Vollman, Rick Moody, Lydia Millet, Kevin Brockmeier, Jhumpa Lahari, and SE Hinton just to name a few. Some of the essays are written by natives of the state and some are by folks who have spent a good amount of time there, but almost without exception, each essay shines. Also includes a conversation with Edward P. Jones on Washington, D.C. This is just a wonderful book and a great way to take a cheap trip across our varied nation. Highly recommended for everyone.

Hangover Square by Patrick Hamilton
Hangover Square

Matthew Silva, March 4, 2008

Excellent. A fantastic and compelling novel that explores the inner workers of a gentleman suffering from mental illness and alcoholism. However, this novel is about much more than the inner process of one mans' mind and paints a vivid and wonderful picture of the saloon life and pre-WWII England. A great bar room book.

A Journey Round My Skull (New York Review Books Classics) by Frigyes Karinthy
A Journey Round My Skull (New York Review Books Classics)

Matthew Silva, March 3, 2008

A great book filled with keen observations on the limits and influences of the human brain. Karinthy's narrative is lucid and engaging. His story is told in a roundabout way, but fills in all the gaps nicely. The section on his surgery is especially chilling and gripping. An awesome journey through one mans' skull. New York Review Of Books has re-published another winning book from the past.
